First reports started around 6pm when the flats to east reported the smell of smoke. The concierge of these flats searched for fire in his building but found nothing. KAREN MURRAY

Karen began her creative career as an account handler at Scotland’s top ad agency, The Leith Agency. There, she worked on loads of big brand campaigns including IRN-BRU and Tennent’s Lager. After a while, Karen decided to have a crack at writing full-time. She broke into the TV industry and wrote the storylines for Scottish soap, River City. Two years later, Karen went for the top soap prize and badgered her way into EastEnders. She has spent the past year writing some of the nation’s most controversial TV storylines. But that doesn’t make her a bad person (cos she loves comedy). Ideally, Karen would like to be as successful as Tina Fey – but since that’s like wishing she looked like Naomi Campbell, Karen would settle for a full-time career writing funny stuff and getting paid for it.
EDDIE McCABE
Eddie is one of Scotland’s finest and funniest comedians. He started out larking about onstage with his mates, The Cuban Brothers. This went swimmingly well and Eddie soon fell into stand-up comedy. Three months later he won the coveted Perrier Comedy Award for Best Newcomer (2001). Did you get that? AFTER THREE MONTHS HE WON A TOP UK COMEDY AWARD. Following a series of gigs and celeb parties (probably), Eddie decided to train as an actor. A regular on Edinburgh’s stand-up comedy circuit, Eddie is also busy writing children’s stories, battling illness and the world. It’s touch and go but he’s confident he’ll overcome his demons. Watch this space for news on where Eddie pops up next – it’ll either be the Royal Variety or the Royal Ed…
