Fire in North Fort Street

On the 26th of June 2010 a fire spread through a flat in North Fort Street. The fire destroyed the top floor flat along with the roof which was still alight after two hours.

First reports started around 6pm when the flats to east reported the  smell of smoke. The concierge of these flats searched for fire in his building but found nothing. Soon afterwords smoke was seen to be coming from the next block of flats. The building was well alight around 1840hrs when Leith FM were made aware of the situation.

There were around 6 fire engines attending along with a few police cars and ambulances. Nobody was hurt in this fire. The tenant, who is believed to not be insured, was taken away to an ambulance later.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said the fourth and fifth floors of the building were affected,  “Ten flats were extensively damaged by the fire” and “The adjacent block of eight flats was also evacuated as a precaution.”
